Bio

I’m Michele, and I’m currently an SLP working in both Victoria and Savage. I attended the University of Kansas, where I received both my Bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language-Hearing and my Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. After taking time to raise my family, I returned to the field of speech- language pathology in 2016. I have experience working with receptive and expressive language disorders, articulation disorders, phonological disorders, apraxia of speech, stuttering, and hearing loss.

I am enthusiastic about what I do and enjoy working with all my clients, but I am particularly passionate about working with Autistic children, from tiny to teens! Autism is another way of thinking, learning, and being, and my goal is to help children develop skills and strategies to autonomously live in a world that is often at odds with how their brain works. In therapy, I take a very neurodiversity-affirming approach. I aim to follow the principles of presuming competence, letting the child lead, teaching self-advocacy skills, honoring sensory needs, accepting all forms of communication, helping to foster a positive Autistic identity, and using a strengths-based approach. I have training and experience in gestalt language processing (GLP), as well as experience working with augmentative communication systems including TouchChat, Grid, Proloquo2go, and Snap+Core. I also have experience with PDA.

On a personal level, I have an understanding of the joys and challenges of the families of the children I serve. Having an Autistic child provided me the opportunity to experience therapy from the viewpoint of a parent, which has cemented my belief in the importance of family involvement and collaboration.

When I’m not at Kid Talk or taking more courses, you can find me spending time with family, reading, crocheting, or learning some new random skill, like my current hobby of binding books.
